Short bio

Pranav Patil is a Researcher PhD candidate in the Institute of Economics at the University of Hohenheim. His research explores connections between energy, environment, development, public finance and political economy. Born in a small town in Maharashtra, India, Pranav studied Natural Science (Math and Physics) at the University of Pune. Before joining for master’s in Economics at the University of Mannheim, he worked extensively on various research projects related to health, education and gender in India. He supplemented his master’s with an internship at UFZ (Environment), Leipzig and ZEW (Public procurement), Mannheim. In his master’s thesis, he explored the causal impact of free agricultural electricity policy on agricultural production and groundwater extraction in India. He used unique panel data with 1 million observations at village-level and implement a multi-stage empirical strategy to evaluate impacts of staggered policy adoption.

Currently, Pranav is working on the DFG funded project – LANDYN under the supervision of Prof. Franziska Schünemann (in collaboration with IFPRI, Washington DC) at the Chair of Bioeconomy. He is exploring relationship between land-labor dynamics & agricultural productivity, structural change and economic transformation scenarios in Sub-Saharan Africa.

In his leisure time, Pranav enjoys nature with small hikes, cycling and long walks. He reads voraciously about history, philosophy, science and enjoys watching movies.
